Let's face it, Tennessee summers are hot!
To keep your apartment from feeling like an oven, we have a few tips and tricks that will help keep you (and your apartment) comfortable this summer.
To keep your apartment cool, you'll need to stop the heat from coming in. To do that, block the sun through the day by keeping your curtains and windows closed. Room darkening curtains work best, but if you don't have heavy curtains, any white material will reflect the heat. Simply add bright white curtains behind your regular ones and keep them closed during the day.
In the evenings, open your windows and let the cooler air circulate through your apartment. Use fans to push the cool breeze from windows throughout your apartment. To keep you cool while you sleep, place a fan in front of the window and point it towards the bed. For an added cooling technique, place a bucket of ice in front of the fan and have the air blow over it, giving you an air conditioning sensation!
If you have ceiling fans, make sure to set them to rotate counter-clockwise during the summer to push cool air down into the room.
As cooling as fans can be, it's important not to run them when a room isn't occupied. All electronics, appliances, and lightbulbs generate heat. Avoid adding extra heat to your apartment by keeping lights out in unoccupied rooms and switching to LED bulbs, as they don't produce as much heat as incandescent or halogen bulbs. When cooking, avoid the oven by using a slow cooker or Instant Pot and keep your exhaust fan running whenever you use the stovetop.
Not only are our Tennessee summers hot, they're also humid! Humidity doesn't allow our sweat to evaporate, which keeps us hot and uncomfortable. Help your apartment feel cooler and more comfortable by adding a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier will remove excess moisture from the air making you feel cooler.
